Erykah Badu – New Amerykah Part 2 – Listening Party

Posted by DJ 1derful On March - 28 - 2010

The “ankh” subtitle delves more into the spiritual themes of Part One. The Egyptian hieroglyphic means “eternal life” after all. Where the 4th World War comes across as a nod towards the war you have with yourself (some have postulated the African-American’s Civil Rights movement), Badu says Return of the Ankh deals with a “spiritual and emotional” battle.

Corinne Bailey Rae – The Sea – Listening Party

Posted by DJ 1derful On January - 28 - 2010

Rae wrote all the songs and reunited with the same production team that so successfully crafted her debut. Most of what you’ll hear is fully fleshed-out music, with big string arrangements that bring to mind an Al Green record. “Closer” recalls Earth, Wind & Fire with its opening riff, while the bouncy “Paris Nights, New York Mornings” is a standout.

Angie Stone – Unexpected – Listening Party

Posted by DJ 1derful On November - 20 - 2009

Review taken from soultracks.com

The Mother of Neo-soul has been many things in a career that has spanned three decades, including a trend setter. But, I’ve never known Angie Stone to be trendy, certainly not as trendy as she is on her sophomore project for Stax Records, Unexpected. If the trend these days is to write hooky songs about flying above all the drama and turning a deaf ear to all the haters and naysayers, then Stone is in the home zone. Her danceable lead single, “I Ain’t Hearin’ You,” and a few other tracks are filled with self-esteem building survival anthems that protest too much over insistent basslines. With catchy choruses galore, the newly trendy Stone solidly transitions to a more urban R&B sound without losing a speck of old school credibility. Yet, what is most unexpected aren’t Stone’s earnestly trendy joints: it’s the emotionally fulfilling cuts from a different era – yes, even different than the Motown and PIR days Stone usually mines — that make Unexpected a most delightful surprise.

Dezaray Dawn – Chameleon EP

Posted by DJ 1derful On September - 26 - 2009

Dezaray has put together an EP that gives listeners a taste of what this young artist with the old soul is all about. The disc is titled “Chameleon,” which is quite apropos, given the widely divergent influences, which can be heard on the tracks Dezaray composed and offers for listeners’ enjoyment.

Dezaray, now based in Atlanta, has performed at several open-mike events, and is building a following in Atlanta’s future soul scene. In addition to her EP, Dezaray can be heard on several pod casts of up-and-coming independent artists, and she has been featured on Atlanta’s 89.3. She has also performed at Cenci in Atlanta to much acclaim.

Dezaray Dawn’s music is soul music at it’s finest — occasionally raw, often sweet, but always emotional and from the heart. Combine that with the solid rhythms of bass and percussion and the futuristic sounds of electronica, and you have one the most talented young artists of future soul.
